America and for that matter the rest of the world has been fortunate to witness some incredible games over a span of eighteen days, beginning with some shocking upsets on the first day March 17, 2005. It has raised the bar in terms of collegiate sports action and once again you will hear the lobbying for a true National Champion in College Football.
Last year everyone’s consensus number one USC easily disposed of number two Oklahoma, but there were several complaints from folks who felt Auburn or Utah deserved a shot at the title. It is safe to say that regardless of how many teams are undefeated, the NCAA could have a 16 team tournament that would quickly result in a champion being named in less then a month of tournament play.
Right now we have over 50 teams playing in meaningless bowl games beginning in December and if the NCAA wants to continue that trend, so be it! Have teams 17-through 52 play a NIT style tournament and thus you can continue the tradition of bowl games.
I suggest that they play the championship game, the week prior to the Super Bowl and that would only add three weeks to the season. You presently have 12 conferences in NCAA Division 1 football and you would then add the top 4 teams from the RPI ranking, similar to college basketball. This would also encourage teams to play tougher non-conference games during the year, rather then beating up on Division 2 schools.
You would have 8 games the first weekend, 4 the next, and then 2 and ultimately the Championship game.
Just a thought! _________________ Brought to you by SportingbetUSA |
