Time again for THE SATURDAY CLASSIC. Hard to believe you don't know all
the rules by now, but here goes anyway:

(1) Name seven horses from any thoroughbred races in North America
running on Saturday.

(2) Throw in an alternate selection or two, just in case of any
scratches. Two is the usual number of alternates people throw in; you
can provide more or fewer as you deem appropriate.

(3) Make an imaginary $2 win-place bet on each horse.

(4) If you want an entry, specify entry in your bet. You will get both
horses or, in case of a scratch, the one that runs. If you specify one
horse of an entry only and it is scratched, you get your alternate.

(5) At the end of the day, post your own results. (For statistics
gathering purposes, please list the win and place prices for each
selection.)

Pretty simple, eh?

When it is all over, I'll summarize everyone's results and award prizes.

· The highest score merits the ever-elusive "Styme." Also, every fourth
week we award the prestigious "John Henry" to the highest four-week
total.

· The lowest positive score earns the enigmatic "The Boz'n." The Boz'n,
by the way, symbolizes the true spirit of degeneracy: Better than
nothing, but just barely.

· And finally, for those talented enough to score a perfect zero, there
is the "Zippy Chippy." Oh, the terrible beauty of it.

There is a lion sleeping in the deep grass. He doesn't even open an eye
if a rabbit scampers by. Maybe he'll open one when a zebra comes in
view. But let an elephant show up and he springs into action. Good-bye
elephant.

Valupix is like that. He'll go a few weeks with little or no results,
but let a juicy payoff like $62.60 on Buzzards Bay show up and there it
is on Valupix's list. Congratulations. The STYME is all yours.

SWB III nabbed the BOZ'N and Ron and Ocala Mike share the ZIPPY.

Valupix $126.80
Fatbet 32.40

SpOOkie 25.80

SWB III 5.80
Ron 0.00
Ocala Mike 0.00

I've known for a long time that if the longer shot of an exacta box
wins, it normally pays better than the quinella. Should the more favored
horse win, the quinella is better. In the Santa Anita Derby the two
longshots paid $751.40 for a $1 exacta and $406.80 for the $2 quinella.
Does anyone know if exacta boxes of two longshots generally pay better
than a quinella on the same two?

Sorry Ron.

It's Ream that shares the ZIPPY. Dementia is creeping up on me. More and
more mistakes. I'll correct the record. After the Belmont I plan to take
off for a trip back east. Would you like to run the Saturday Classic
until the week after Labor Day?
