It had been a month since I last gambled, what with work, family and
automotive commitments fillng my dance card, but Saturday a friend and
I drove to Spirit Mountain for a boyz night out.
All three craps tables were open, and the two five dollar tables were
usually full; often the ten dollar table was sparsely populated.
Overall I won a bit at craps, but ended down a trifle for the day due
to some predictable yet still aggravating losses at the $5 slots.
The crowd was unusually colorful at some of the tables, especially
these three guys from Eugene, Oregon doing a Blues Brothers shtick,
sporting zoot suits, dark shades, their type A machismo dripping all
over the tables, betting large amounts, yelling, ebullient, drunk, high
(both?), having ab absolute, contagious blast.
Some heavy action for such young men: where do people get this kind of
money, anyway?
I usually placed 6 and 8 for $12; whichever number hit, I tossed in $4
and pressed it to $30; if it hit again, I came down on 6 and 8 and
awaited a seven out or shooter making his point.
Not a bad way to play, if sixes and eights are evident.
My buddy, who doesn't know a bunch about craps, did well betting horn
and hardways (go figure).
On the drive back to PDX, I told him next time to toss in three bucks,
not five bucks, and say "three way craps."
It was like a lightbulb went off in his head: he "got it," at last.
One of the casino crew, a guy I hadn't noticed there before, savvy
(from Nevada, maybe?) was really hustling the crowd for tokes,
shamelessly.
I made some joking comments to him about the stiffs not toking, and he
got even more belligerent and condescending to the non-tippers (95% of
the players).
Funny stuff.
Saw the retired lady who always seems to be betting in the high limit
slot area with a fistful of bills in hand while simultaneously playing
3 machines hit a jackpot on a hundered dollar slot.
Very telling: the suits were all over the maching, flitting about, but
she was ignoring them completely, seemingly oblivious to her good
fortune, moving from machine to machine, feeding their maws, completely
and utterly in a different world.
Strange world.
